A Wave of Earthquakes Shakes Tokara Islands

Japan’s remote Tokara Islands have been rattled by hundreds of earthquakes over the past few days, sparking fears among residents of an impending major catastrophe. On Saturday, July 5, a quake measuring 5.3 in magnitude struck islands in southwestern Japan.
Details of the Latest Tremor

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake occurred off the Tokara island chain at 6:29 a.m. at a depth of approximately 20 kilometers, as reported by local media. No tsunami warning was issued following the quake.
Predictions by Manga Artist Ryo Tatsuki

The seismic activity coincides with predictions made by manga artist Ryo Tatsuki, a self-proclaimed clairvoyant who had previously foretold the 2011 disaster. Tatsuki had speculated that Japan would face a major calamity in early July.
A Vision of Destruction

In her comic book The Future I Saw, originally published in 1999, Tatsuki claimed that on July 5, 2025, Japan would experience a massive disaster. The book describes cities sinking into the sea and a mega-tsunami stronger than the one that struck during the 2011 Tohoku earthquake.
Experts Dismiss the Connection

Despite the coincidence of the 5.3-magnitude quake on July 5, the Japan Meteorological Agency clarified that the event was not linked to the viral manga prediction. Seismologists also rejected any connection, emphasizing there is no scientific method to predict earthquakes or their magnitudes. The Tokara Islands, located between Kyushu’s southern tip and the Okinawa islands, lie in a highly active seismic zone where frequent small quakes are common. Since June 21, the region has experienced over 1,000 earthquakes, including a 5.5-magnitude temblor on Thursday.
