A 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Avacha Bay area off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Tuesday, extending a series of aftershocks that have affected the region since several major quakes over the weekend.

According to the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Survey of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the earthquake happened at 1:59 p.m. local time (0159 GMT), with its epicenter at a depth of 51.2 kilometers and about 170 kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the regional capital.
