1. Towering cumulus clouds that keep building upward

A fluffy cumulus cloud on its own is nothing to worry about. But when those clouds start stacking vertically instead of just drifting along, that’s the atmosphere telling you something is feeding a strong updraft underneath. Cumulus clouds are those fluffy, cotton ball shapes that are harmless in that state, but once they start towering, a storm is closing in as atmospheric pressure pushes the fluff upward and can quickly turn into a storm.
This vertical growth is often the first visible clue that instability in the atmosphere is strong enough to support a real thunderstorm rather than just a passing shower. Watch for a cloud that looks like it’s boiling upward on one side, almost like smoke rising from a chimney on a still day. Once that column starts pushing miles into the sky, the storm has the fuel it needs to intensify quickly.
2. A sky that turns an odd shade of green or dark gray

This one gets dismissed as folklore sometimes, but it’s grounded in actual physics. A greenish sky is a classic sign of an intensifying storm, not an old wives tale, and this eerie color often appears before severe weather, particularly when hail is present, because the green tint comes from sunlight scattering through towering storm clouds filled with moisture and ice.
The same effect can produce a dark gray or even yellowish cast depending on the sun’s angle and how much hail and moisture the storm is holding aloft. Before a tornado strikes, the sky often takes on unusual hues such as green, dark gray, or yellowish, and these colors can be caused by light scattering through heavy rain, hail, or dense clouds. A green sky by itself doesn’t guarantee a tornado is coming, but it’s a strong hint that hail and heavy rain are already loaded into the storm and things could escalate fast.
3. A shelf cloud or squall line rolling in on the horizon

Shelf clouds have a distinctive look, low, wide, and horizontal, almost like a wave frozen in the sky. Shelf clouds are large, horizontal, and found on the front edge of storms, and while they can look ominous, they are not precursors to tornadoes, but are often seen with squall lines or bow echoes, signaling intense winds.
If you see one of these approaching, it’s usually a sign that a gust front is about to arrive well ahead of the heaviest rain. The wind can shift suddenly and pick up in strength within seconds of the shelf cloud passing overhead. This is the atmosphere’s way of announcing that a line of storms, possibly a full squall line, is pushing through with damaging straight line winds close behind.
4. A rotating wall cloud beneath the storm’s base

Of all the visual warning signs meteorologists track, a rotating wall cloud carries the most weight. A wall cloud is a localized, persistent, often abrupt lowering from a rain-free base, ranging from a fraction of a mile up to nearly five miles in diameter, and when seen from within several miles, many wall clouds exhibit rapid upward motion and cyclonic rotation.
Not every wall cloud produces a tornado, but the ones that rotate deserve immediate attention. Not all wall clouds rotate, but rotating wall clouds usually develop before strong or violent tornadoes, by anywhere from a few minutes up to nearly an hour. Storm spotters are trained to watch specifically for that rotation, since persistent, organized rotation in the storm base or wall cloud is a serious tornado warning sign, even when the rotation appears slow, and it can indicate a rotating thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado.
5. Large hail falling from the storm

Hail size is one of the more objective, measurable signs that a storm has crossed into severe territory, and it’s actually part of the official definition. A thunderstorm is classified as severe when it contains one or more of the following: hail one inch or greater, winds gusting in excess of 50 knots (57.5 mph), or a tornado.
That one inch threshold, roughly the size of a quarter, isn’t arbitrary. That’s about 1 inch in diameter or bigger, whereas prior to 2010, the criteria was penny sized hail, or three quarters of an inch in diameter. Storms capable of producing hail that large are usually pulling in serious energy from the atmosphere, and larger hailstones often show up in the same storms that later spin up tornadoes, which is why spotters treat big hail as a red flag rather than just an inconvenience.
6. A sudden, eerie calm or a sharp shift in wind

Of all six signs, this might be the most counterintuitive, since it involves the absence of activity rather than an increase. One of the most overlooked warning signs is a sudden, eerie calm, since in some cases a storm may briefly go quiet before the most dangerous weather hits, which can happen when a powerful updraft pulls air into the storm, temporarily reducing surface winds.
A related version of this same warning involves wind direction rather than wind speed. A noticeable shift in wind direction, accompanied by intense gusts, is another key indicator worth watching for. If a storm has been loud and windy and then suddenly goes quiet, that stillness is not a sign the danger has passed. If a storm has been raging and suddenly everything goes still, take shelter immediately, it could be the calm before the storm’s worst moments.
None of these six signs guarantee that a tornado or damaging wind event is imminent on their own. Meteorologists look at them together, alongside radar data and atmospheric soundings, before issuing a warning. But knowing what to watch and listen for gives anyone standing outside during a darkening afternoon a real head start on getting somewhere safe.
