Something quiet and irreversible is happening to the planet’s water. Lakes that sustained civilizations for thousands of years are shrinking into salt flats and cracked mud. They don’t make the front page the way floods or wildfires do. There’s no dramatic single event to photograph – just a slow recession of shoreline, year after year, until what was once a body of water becomes a memory traced in pale mineral sediment.

The scale of what’s unfolding is hard to overstate. More than half of the world’s large lakes and reservoirs have shrunk since the early 1990s, chiefly because of climate change, intensifying concerns about water for agriculture, hydropower and human consumption. Millions of people who live near these lakes are already living with the consequences – and dozens of major cities are quietly running out of time.

A team of international researchers found that some of the world’s most important freshwater sources – from the Caspian Sea between Europe and Asia to South America’s Lake Titicaca – lost water at a cumulative rate of around 22 gigatonnes per year for nearly three decades. From 1992 to 2020, the world lost the equivalent of 17 Lake Meads – America’s largest reservoir. That number is almost impossible to visualize, which is perhaps part of why it hasn’t triggered the urgency it deserves.

Terms such as “water stress” and “water crisis” are no longer sufficient descriptions of the world’s new water realities. Many rivers, lakes, aquifers, wetlands, and glaciers have been pushed beyond tipping points and cannot bounce back to past baselines. A 2026 report from the United Nations University formally defined the situation using a new term: global water bankruptcy. Nature provides income in the form of rain and snow, but the world is spending more than it receives – extracting from its rivers, lakes, wetlands and underground aquifers at a much faster rate than they are replenished, putting us in debt.

Climate change is the main cause of the drying up of lakes; as the planet warms, evaporation rates increase, which leads to lower lake levels. Unsustainable levels of water demand from agriculture, hydropower and human consumption are also contributing factors. The combination is particularly devastating because both forces reinforce each other – warmer temperatures dry out surfaces faster while demand from farms and cities keeps pulling water out of the system.

Agriculture accounts for roughly seven in ten gallons of global freshwater usage, and this demand is only going to increase as the world’s population grows. Research findings indicate that more than half of Earth’s large water bodies experienced drying between 1992 and 2020, and what is surprising is that this phenomenon occurred not only in arid regions but also in humid regions. Even lakes in places that receive decent rainfall are losing ground – because the atmosphere itself, warmed by rising temperatures, is drawing more moisture upward than ever before.

Central Asia’s Aral Sea is the poster child for irrigation-led decline; once the fourth-largest lake in the world, it has withered dramatically since its tributaries were diverted in the 1960s. Today, satellite images show what was once a vast inland sea reduced to scattered, salty puddles surrounded by exposed desert. The fishing communities that once lived on its shores have long since scattered or disappeared.

This is happening all over the world, including in the high plains of Bolivia. What was once the country’s second-largest lake, Lake Poopo, has been reduced to a barren salt flat by a devastating combination of water diversions and climate change. These aren’t cautionary tales from the distant future. They are finished chapters – permanent losses that no restoration plan can fully reverse. They serve as a preview of what awaits other lakes currently in decline.

Once the largest saltwater lake in the Middle East, Lake Urmia has shrunk by roughly nine-tenths since the 1970s due to dam construction, agricultural water diversion, and climate change. More than 60 dams built on its feeder rivers choked off inflows, while farmers diverted water into irrigation channels and decades of groundwater extraction drained the aquifers below. Rising temperatures accelerated evaporation as precipitation fell.

The lake usually hits its widest extent in spring, only to dry out significantly by late summer. That pattern shows a stark reality: Lake Urmia no longer functions as a permanent lake but has instead taken on the characteristics of a seasonal wetland. A member of Iran’s parliament warned that the lake was “turning into a salt mine,” cautioning that dust from the exposed lake bed could travel as far as 500 kilometers, endangering agriculture and public health. The ecological and human cost is still accumulating.

In Tehran, the crisis is particularly acute: rainfall totals dropped more than 40 percent below the long-term average, at the same time as the capital set records for water consumption. The city and province are in the midst of a five-year drought, when in the past, two dry years had been followed by a wet one. In early 2025, Tehran’s five main reservoirs held only roughly 13 percent of their capacity, with one vital source – the Lar Dam – almost empty at just one percent full.

In November 2025, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian warned that Tehran, a metropolis of 15 million people, may have to consider rationing measures, followed by a partial evacuation of its population. The cause is neither an external military threat nor an insurrection, but a more structural factor: the depletion of its water resources. Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, is depleting its groundwater at a rate of 44 million cubic meters per year, with half of its wells already dry. The city of six million people could run out of water by 2030, some experts say.

Mexico City stretches out across a high-altitude lake bed and sits atop an ancient aquifer, which provides around 60 percent of drinking water for the city’s 22 million residents. Over the years, this aquifer has been so over-pumped that it’s caused the land above it to subside. New NASA satellite measurements from late 2025 and early 2026 put the scale of the problem into startling focus.

Between October 2025 and January 2026, during Mexico City’s dry season, NISAR mapped the movement of the ground beneath the city and found that parts of the city are sinking at a rate of around 0.8 inches a month – that’s more than 9.5 inches every year. The very fine mineral grains of the ancient lake bed have been steadily repacking themselves more tightly, causing the ground to shrink and subside – a kind of compaction that is irreversible and is responsible for the appearance of extensive fractures that damage buildings, historical sites, sewers, and gas and water lines in the city.

For some of the world’s largest cities, the crisis has already arrived. Metropolises around the globe – from Cape Town to São Paulo and Tehran – have already faced their first “Day Zero” emergencies, events where water supplies for a city are near complete depletion. These cities survived through emergency measures, but the underlying conditions that caused those crises were never fully resolved.

Around the planet, some of the world’s most prominent cities are already outrunning their water supplies. Notable among these are São Paulo, Bangalore, Beijing, Cairo, Jakarta, Moscow, Istanbul, Mexico City, London, Tokyo, Miami, Cape Town, New Delhi, San Diego, and Las Vegas. By 2050, water scientists estimate, around 240 cities worldwide will be short of water, including at least 10 to 20 megacities with populations over 10 million.

UNEP tracks the water quality of 4,000 large lakes around the world. More than one quarter are becoming increasingly turbid, or cloudy, and almost 15 percent are experiencing a rise in organic matter – two telltale signs of pollution from sources like cities, farms and factories. This matters because a lake can still hold water and still be functionally useless if that water is too contaminated to treat and use.

Growing loads of untreated wastewater, agricultural runoff, industrial pollution, and salinization are degrading rivers, lakes, and aquifers. Even where volumes appear sufficient on paper, the fraction of water that is safe for drinking, irrigation, and ecosystems continues to shrink. The result is a paradox playing out in dozens of countries: water all around, and almost none of it safe enough to drink without expensive treatment that many communities cannot afford.

A 2024 report by UNEP and UN-Water found that surface water bodies, including lakes, are shrinking or being lost entirely in 364 basins worldwide – nearly 3 percent of all basins. Those affected basins are home to an estimated 93 million people. Globally, the picture is even more stark. Around 2.2 billion people still lack safely managed drinking water, 3.5 billion lack safely managed sanitation, and nearly 4 billion face severe water scarcity for at least one month each year.

Nearly 6 billion people – roughly three quarters of the world’s population in 2020 – live in countries that have been losing freshwater over the past two decades. That figure reframes the entire conversation. This isn’t a regional story or a developing-world problem. It’s a planetary condition, moving at varying speeds, affecting communities from the American Southwest to Central Asia to the highlands of South America.

Water-related violence has nearly doubled since 2022, rising from 235 incidents to 419 in 2024, according to the Water Conflict Chronology database. Shifting patterns of water storage threaten water availability and sustainable water management for people and the environment, putting livelihoods and food security at risk while acting as a trigger for climate migration and transboundary conflict both within and between nations.

Protecting the world’s lakes is a key part of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, an international agreement to safeguard the natural world. The accord calls on countries to conserve and restore 30 percent of inland waters, which includes lakes, by 2030. Recognizing water bankruptcy can help countries move from short-term emergency thinking to long-term strategies to reduce irreversible damage, with recommended actions including transforming farming through shifting crops and more efficient irrigation, better water monitoring using AI and remote sensing, reducing pollution, and increasing protection for wetlands and groundwater. Whether the political will to act at the necessary scale can be found, before more lakes disappear entirely, remains the most important open question of the coming decade.
