Nearly every forecast this year circles back to one climate pattern developing thousands of miles away in the Pacific Ocean. Last year offers a sobering example of how a below-par season on paper can still turn devastating for one particular place. In 2025, the Atlantic basin produced 13 named storms, of which five became hurricanes and four reached major hurricane status, including the Category 5 Hurricane Melissa, which made landfall in southwestern Jamaica on October 28.
